Today, 3D Vision is the most commonly used method for the precise three-dimensional inspection and measurement of complex 3D free formed surfaces, and new fields of applications are constantly being explored.
3D machine vision systems typically comprise multiple cameras or one or more laser displacement sensors. Whether performing a single profile measurement or scanning an entire surface in 3D, we can recommend powerful 3D machine vision tools.
Multi-camera 3D vision in robotic guidance applications provides the robot with part orientation information. These systems involve multiple cameras mounted at different locations and “triangulation” on an objective position in 3D space. Combining with machine vision systems, 3D Imaging has allowed for higher accuracy, especially with Cognex’s 3D-A5000.
In contrast, 3D laser-displacement sensor applications typically include surface inspection and volume measurement, producing 3D results with as few as a single camera. A height map is generated from the displacement of the reflected lasers’ location on an object. The object or camera must be moved to scan the entire product similar to line scanning. With a calibrated offset laser, displacement sensors can measure parameters such as surface height and planarity with accuracy within 20 μm.
An interesting solution for basic 3D measurement tasks is provided by the intelligent 3D sensors of Canadian manufacturer LMI which also operate on the laser triangualation principle. The Gocator product range offers easy entry to 3D measurement as these products are easy to install and run via an intuitive web interface and do not require programming. The LMI Gocator 3000 series is also based on light stripe projection and allows 3D analyis directly within the smart camera.
